Story of Malati

By Asok Bhattacharya | Asst. Project coordinator

Malati, age 15, is a resident of Mohabatpur and studies in Class IX at ‘Mohabat Nagar Kailashpur Mission Siksha Sadan’.

Malati stays with her family comprising 6 members- her parents, 1 younger brother, 1 younger sister, grandmother and Malati herself. The entire family stays in a small hut with Tripol roofing. Her father’s name is Sri Bimal and mother is Mrs. Kamala. Bimal has one small eatery, which is the main source of sustenance for the family. Malati’s mother Kamala besides the household activities also used to assist Bimal in running the eatery. On an average they earn around INR 3000 from the eatery-shop.

Since 2017 Malati was studying sincerely with the support of ‘Nayantara’ Project. But, recently her study is impacted with deep adversity as her mother, Kamala got ill with a mental disease. It was diagnosed by a Medical Practitioner on 16.06.2018.

After visiting the family it was revealed that 7 years back Kamala had suffered the same ailment. As told by her family,  that since Kamala could not be cured by any medicine she was taken to an Excorciser locally called ‘Gunin’ and got cured.

At present, as told by the family members, though Kamala was taken to a local medical practitioner and took medicines nothing has improved. Her ailment restores recurrently. This has impacted the family and Malati deeply.

Malati being the eldest daughter has to take up the responsibility of household works, besides taking care of her mother. Even, she also has to share hand with her father in running the Eatery business because it is the only resource of livelihood sustenance for the entire family.

Malati’s father Bimal is shattered within with the consequences. Malati’s younger siblings has also stopped going for tution classes. The entire family now thinks that they are standing at an edge and needs support.
