Within the Nafasi community of artists, 100% of our members have been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. They have lost significant amounts of income and experienced numerous cancelled and postponed opportunities, making it difficult for them to survive this time. You can help us by donating to our COVID-19 response, which includes several initiatives designed to help artists get back on their feet.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has hit the cultural sector in Tanzania extremely hard, leading to drastically reduced income and opportunities for practicing artists who even in the best of times struggle to make a living from their work. Nafasi Art Space as an organisation has also struggled to get through this time -- being forced to lay off staff, cancel programmes, and go into survival mode. Dar es Salaam's already small art scene is now at risk of fading away.
This project will help equip Nafasi to make digital innovations to take our programming online in order to allow our artists to continue to learn, exchange, and share their work with the public. This project will also help us to directly support artists and their families, by providing funds to cover expenses due to illness and canceled gigs and exhibitions. Finally, it will allow us to create a residency and exhibition for artists to tell their stories of this time and earn much-needed income.
By supporting artists to rebuild their careers, Nafasi will help the arts sector to begin its recovery. It is vital during this time that artists do not give up on their creative careers because of economic reasons. The potential long-term impact of this project will be to build the resilience of the arts ecosystem and demonstrate that art is a vital part of a healthy and united community, making people better able to get through difficult times such as these.
