Nafasi Art Space is Tanzania's most vibrant & vital independent art space, providing artist studios and mentorship, trainings for young artists, curators and arts managers, and creating platforms for artists to reach the public. The goal of Nafasi is to protect & strengthen cultural rights, such as freedom of expression and equitable access to cultural experiences. Thanks to you, we raised nearly $24,000 in 2020-22 to survive difficult times. We're now extending our goal to reach new heights!
We've grown to become one of the leading art spaces in East Africa, however we are constantly struggling for funding. We have core donors that fund about 60% of our costs, and we cover another 20% through self-generated revenue, but this still leaves a significant gap. While we're often able to find grants for exciting once-off projects, the daily running costs are much harder to cover. There is little to no public funding nor private sponsorship for the arts in Tanzania. Can you help us?
The arts ecosystem in Dar has come to depend on Nafasi as a space, a network, and a platform for artists to create, exchange, and reach the public with groundbreaking and innovative work that has the potential to transform society. Our team of dedicated arts managers and curators support the artistic development of hundreds of aspiring and emerging artists, not only from Tanzania but from around the world. Nafasi's infrastructure becomes a backbone for a thriving cultural sector in the region.
Over 11+ years, Nafasi has proven the purpose & value of arts and culture for community development in a rapidly changing city. Nafasi provides a safe space for creative expression, the chance to create jobs & income for artists, and unique and immersive cultural experiences for people from all walks of life. Making & experiencing art is a fundamental part of being human as well as a tool for making the world a more just & peaceful place. Nafasi can continue to play a vital role with your help.
