After the summer break, classes resumed on September 16th, marking an exciting new stage of progress in the musical education and personal development of the children involved.
Gaita Auditions: Embracing Venezuela’s Musical Traditions
In October, we kicked off auditions to form the Gaita ensemble at the Wayuu Taya Nucleus. Gaita Zuliana, a traditional Venezuelan folk genre from Maracaibo in Zulia State, is an essential part of the Christmas spirit in Venezuela. This joyful music features various percussion instruments—furruco, tambora, charrasca, and maracas—along with the Venezuelan cuatro, a four-stringed instrument. Recently, gaita music has evolved to include electric bass, synthesizers, and flutes.
Getting Ready for the Year-End Concert
As we near the end of the year, the upcoming months are filled with rehearsals for the 2024 Christmas and year-end concert. Students from the Musical Initiation, Choral, Ancestral Music, Alma Llanera, and Orchestral Programs are working to prepare for what promises to be an unforgettable event.
In November, the Wayuu Taya children will attend special music seminars and participate in a concert alongside El Sistema and the group Payasos Humanitarios at the historic Baralt Theatre. These experiences will inspire and motivate them as they connect with other young musicians and further develop their skills.
Wayuu children advance in the Music Heals program
Since starting in July 2023, the program has grown to a total of 42 children attending guitar classes at the Apuna farm, with new instruments. This group represents the Wayúu ethnic group, the largest Indigenous community in Venezuela, where music has become a source of hope and joy, connecting them to their heritage and opening new opportunities.
The initiative includes lessons in acoustic and electric guitars, drums, trumpets, Venezuelan cuatro, and popular singing. Some talented young musicians are preparing to form a band, showcasing their creativity and teamwork while exploring modern music genres.
