The past few months have been filled with music, learning, and new opportunities for the children and youth participating in the Wayuu Taya Foundation’s music programs.
One of the highlights of this reporting period was the celebration of El Sistema’s 51st Anniversary on March 24. As part of the National Recital Day held under the theme “Living the Joy of Music,” students from The Núcleo Fundación Wayuu Taya took the stage to share what they have been learning and practicing throughout the year. Children and youth from different instrumental programs, including strings, woodwinds, and brass, proudly performed for their families and community members, demonstrating the progress they continue to make through their dedication and perseverance.
On March 17, several students from our Núcleo, who are also members of the Zulia State Symphonic Choir, participated in a tribute concert honoring the music of Juan Luis Guerra. For many of them, it was an exciting opportunity to perform alongside musicians from other programs and be part of a large cultural event.
Music education goes beyond regular classes. On February 4, four students from the transverse flute program participated in a specialized master class held at the Fundación del Niño Zuliano, where they had the opportunity to strengthen their technical skills and learn from experienced instructors.
Our students also took part in important exchange activities with other El Sistema programs. On April 17 and 18, Núcleo Mara invited four viola students from the Núcleo Fundación Wayuu Taya to participate in a master class and public performance led by Maestro Guillermo Fuentes. The experience allowed them to share music with other young musicians, perform individual repertoires, and receive recognition for their participation.
Another memorable event took place on April 9 during the celebration of International Cuatro Day. Seventy-five children and youth participated in a special concert honoring Venezuela’s national instrument. The event, held at Plaza Bolívar in El Moján, brought together students, families, and community members to celebrate an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.
The period concluded with a Mother’s Day Concert held on May 22 at Jesús Redentor Church in Tamare. All students from the Núcleo Fundación Wayuu Taya participated, offering a heartfelt musical tribute to mothers and families who continuously support their children’s artistic development.
Meanwhile, the Music Heals Program successfully resumed classes in February. Following a talent-based audition process, 16 new students joined the program and began training in keyboard, drums, Venezuelan cuatro, guitar, bass, trombone, and saxophone. Classes have continued consistently throughout the reporting period, providing young participants with regular opportunities to learn, practice, and grow as musicians.
In addition, the program expanded its outreach by offering guitar classes at Escuela Básica Nacional Nerio Emiro Semprún Polanco, allowing more children to experience the benefits of music education for the first time.
Through concerts, master classes, and weekly instruction, these young musicians continue to develop their musical abilities, discipline, confidence, and sense of belonging that come from being part of an orchestra and a musical community.
We are grateful to El Sistema, Music Heals International, Giustra International Foundation, CORE Response, Acceso, our teachers, families, and supporters for making these opportunities possible and for continuing to believe in the transformative power of music.
Thank You!
