Strengthening nonprofit boards in Japan

By Mio Yamamoto | Co-Founder and Executive Director

Dear generous supporters,

Thank you for supporting us through GlobalGiving. Your kindness has helped us move our work forward, step by step, and we're grateful to have you with us.

We're excited to share that we've just launched a new online course: Board Governance for Nonprofits — Designing Your Board.

Across Japan, we hear the same concerns from nonprofit and social-enterprise leaders again and again: boards whose members haven't changed since the organization was founded, founders carrying every major decision alone, and board meetings that have become little more than a rubber stamp. Building a thoughtful, well-composed board is one of the most important investments an organization can make in its mission — yet it's so often pushed aside amid the demands of daily work.

In Japan, board governance is still a largely overlooked field. Training and resources for boards rarely exist, and few organizations invest in them. That's exactly why we created this course based on our past in-person training.

It's designed as blended learning — combining on-demand video lectures, live group sessions, and collaborative group work — so that leaders not only absorb the ideas at their own pace, but also reflect together and apply them directly to their own organizations.

You can learn more here:

And this is where we'd like to ask for your help — in two ways.

Support us through GlobalGiving. Because this field is so underinvested in Japan, the organizations that need this learning most are often the ones least able to afford it — small, resourceful groups doing essential work in their communities. Your gift allows us to extend this course to more organizations, and offer it free or subsidized to those who can't pay. Every contribution helps another leader build a stronger board, and a more resilient organization behind it.

Spread the word. If you know a nonprofit in Japan that could benefit from this course, please share it with them. A simple introduction can open the door to better governance for an organization you care about.

This course, Designing Your Board, is the first step in a larger journey. We'll be rolling out additional courses on board leadership and governance over the coming months — each designed to help nonprofit leaders strengthen their organizations from the inside out. We'll let you know as they become available.

With gratitude,

Mio and World in You Team
