Morocco Earthquake Emergency Response

By IsraAID Staff | IsraAID Morocco

A large-scale 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco overnight on September 8, 2023. The earthquake – the strongest to hit the region in 123 years - took thousands of lives and damaged infrastructure across five provinces. More than 300,000 people were affected in the largely rural, mountainous areas in and around Marrakech.

Critical Relief Distributions

IsraAID's emergency response team arrived in Morocco within 48 hours to deliver urgent aid to earthquake-affected communities. Side-by-side with local community leaders in the High Atlas Mountains, we distributed vital relief items including clean water, hundreds of kilograms of fresh and dried food, blankets, tents, and lamps for over 9,000 people.

 Child-Friendly Spaces

IsraAID’s protection team set up two Child-Friendly Spaces (CFSs) in displacement camps, run by local IsraAID trained volunteers from the communities themselves. The spaces offered children and parents organized activities, stress relief, and the chance to "just be kids." Through play, learning, and creative expression, children processed their experiences whilst parents had a moment of respite from the overwhelming situation.

 Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

With thousands displaced to temporary camps, ensuring adequate hygiene and sanitation infrastructure and supplies was crucial to preventing a secondary crisis. IsraAID supported the construction of emergency toilets and showers. We provided the materials and trained local community counterparts to build and maintain the units. We also distributed hygiene and resilience kits with everything from soap and toothpaste to stress relief activities for children, supporting them to restore a sense of dignity and normalcy amidst their displacement.

When the immediate emergency had passed, IsraAID focused our efforts on improving WASH infrastructure in communities where access to WASH facilities was severely impacted. In collaboration with local partners, we rehabilitated water and sanitation infrastructure for displaced and affected people. The program was complemented by community engagement initiatives and WASH education that equipped communities with sustainable resources and knowledge to ensure they will continue to have access to these vital resources for as long as they are needed.

Next Steps

With your support, IsraAID worked hand in hand with crisis-affected communities from the first days of the emergency to ensure they had access to food; shelter; safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services; and mental health and psychosocial support.  We have now successfully concluded our programming in Morocco, ensuring vulnerable communities are equipped with the vital tools and resources they need to rebuild stronger than before.

Thank you for your support!
