By taking stock of the past year, we see the results and impacts generated. For América Solidaria - Haiti, this year has been rich in experiences, challenges and achievements. There’s still lack of many actions and hands to end the inequities in Haiti, but we are on the right track and we thank you, collaborators and all those who in one way or another support this cause, because we are sure that it is worth the contribution we are bringing together.

According to data from the Haitian Ministry of Public Health, only 37.3% of births are attended by a health professional, the maternal mortality rate is 380 children per 100,000 live births and infant mortality is 69 deaths per 1,000 live births. Despite everything, according to UNICEF, the situation is improving; it is excellent news because, among all, we contribute to improve the situation.

The contribution of GlobalGiving donors contributed to the implementation of the program "Care for the young and newborns in Haiti" which was implemented in 2 institutions of vulnerable localities of Haiti: in the department of health of Sant Zanj Makenson, a school in Wharf Jerémie at Cité Soleil and Klinik Saint Esprit in Croix des Bouquets. As a result, we provide prenatal medical care, general medical care, nutrition education for pregnant women, as well as postpartum care and counseling. Without these initiatives, many pregnant women of those localities would not have access to any kind of medical care.

Since the beginning of the campaign to date, we have received 35 donations, raising a total of $ 665, which has enabled 46.2% of our target to receive direct attention and participate in workshops of prevention. As for the work done, Natalia, a Chilean professional volunteer from the Cité Soleil project, explain: "We have been able to certify that the only way to obtain a change in this system that only deals with some and leaves the others outside is uniting the will and understanding that the poverty of some makes us all poor ", because for example, Marie-Louise, a pregnant Haitian mother attended the center, for lack of timely care elsewhere, lost her twins during childbirth.

In America Solidaria, we are very grateful to all those who value inclusion and who help to improve the lives of pregnant women so that they have greater peace of mind during pregnancy and have better tools to care for their children born in Haiti.

We invite you to continue to join the cause and invite others to come along. Thank you very much for continuing to walk with us and continue to say NO to inequalities in Haiti! Your contribution is very precious and will be very usefull!

She has a dream

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Haiti is one of 40 countries with high maternal mortality, with 350 deaths per 100,000 births. To change reality, we must commit ourselves!

In Haiti, access to health care remains problematic, since most private health care institutions have costs that are often inaccessible to the vast majority of the population and some public hospitals operate with lack of equipment. In addition, many pregnant women do not understand the importance of regular visits during the pre and post natal period. On the other hand, the precarious economic situation of many women urges them more to prepare clothes and material care for their babies than to take charge of regularly attending health checks.

Katia, is 19 years old and is waiting for the arrival of her first child. She told us:

« In Haiti, the hospitals do not have this practice to make workshops to inform pregnant women. When we go to the hospital, we received medical consultation, they give us medicines if necessary and we are waiting for the next visit. With the workshops of the volunteers from América Solidaria, I feel safer, I feel that my health and my baby's health count. I wish that all the hospitals in the country could inform pregnant women like this.»

Since 2010, América Solidaria works with pregnant women to help them carry out their pregnancies and stimulate their babies for an integral development. It is not a job we do alone, but a challenge where the participation of all counts. We must continue to work together to help as many Haitian women as possible to have access to direct care and prevention workshops we conducted at Angel Mackenson School, at Wharf Jeremie -Cite Soleil-. Thanks to 26 donors, so far we have been able to raise $ 543 that will help us offer to future mothers in Haiti the right to have a safe pregnancy and take better care of newborns .  Join us and together, let’s make Katia's wish come true.

According to the World Bank, 25 of 1000 children born in Haiti die of causes like a lack of pre- and post-natal care. Facing this reality, indifference ceases to be an option!

Adeline, a 32-year old expectant mother, not only attends Klinik Saint Spirit in Haiti but also participates in workshops with pregnant women. After participating in them, she shares:

Jessica's workshop help me knows what can I eat and how to take care of myself during the pregnancy for everything to be alright. I've learn how to take care of the baby to keep her healthy. This is my second child and if I had all this information when I was about to have my first child I would have been more prepared to take care of her. Now, thanks to Jessica's workshops, I'm less worried about what I feel during the pregnancy because I know it's normal and I know what to do if there is a problem."

The statistics are striking: 5.9% of Haitian children die for preventable reasons like malnutrition and lack of vaccines (UNICEF, Ministerio de la Salud Pública y la Población de Haití, 2012), which means that we need to continue working. Adeline is only one of the 6500 mothers we want to reach thanks to the direct attention and prevention workshops we carry out at Escuela Angel Mackenson in Wharf Jeremie, Cite Soleil, and Kilink Saint Spirit in Croix des Bouquets de Haiti.

Since the beginning of this campaign, we’ve received 17 donations that have helped us raise $353 to give pregnant women like Adeline more confidence during their pregnancies and more tools to care for their children born in Haiti.

We say NO to the inequality in Haiti! Your support matters!
