TSU's GlobeMed Spring 2015 Update

By Keilah Sullivan | Global Giving Correspondent

Truman’s GlobeMed chapter has launched a number of campaigns this semester and is planning many more throughout the spring. Thus far, we’ve hosted two benefit dinners—one in January and the other in February—and a game night. In addition, our small business coordinators conduct weekly on-campus sales of edible items as far ranging as chocolate chip pancakes and fried Oreos. Our new members are also in the process of planning their spring campaign.

Thanks to the devoted efforts of our members, GlobeMed has raised over $4,200 so far. We’ve set a goal of raising an additional $2,000 throughout the remainder of the semester via such campaigns as the Haitian Celebration and Global Health Action Week. Several of our campaigns this year involve collaborating with other Truman State University organizations. For example, one of our campaigns involves an obstacle course created via a partnership with Truman’s ROTC. Similarly, “GlobeSlam” will consist of a slam poetry presentation featuring poets from TruSlam, Truman’s slam poetry organization, and other "freelance" verbal artists. By creating these interdisciplinary opportunities, GlobeMed hopes to reach a greater audience at Truman and better inform our student body about Maison de Naissance.

Finally, GlobeMed is excited to announce that on April 17, TED Talk speaker Dr. Francis de los Reyes is coming to Truman to discuss his work in improving sanitation around the world. We also hope to recruit Truman faculty members for our weekly global health university sessions at general body meetings.

As always, we want to thank all of those who have graciously donated their time, talents, or resources to GlobeMed. Your kind support makes it possible for us to make a difference in the realm of global health equity, specifically involving Maison de Naissance and more broadly in terms of educating the public about this critical issue.
