Summary

Knights In White Lycra (KIWL) is a Japan-based fundraising group of people of all ages and backgrounds who 'get fit & give back' through sporting events. This year, KIWL has chosen to support NPO Mirai no Mori, an organization that empowers abused, neglected, and orphaned children in Japan, as their charity partner. Through charity events and the annual 4-day cycle ride, KIWL and its riders will raise funds for Mirai no Mori's life-changing outdoors programs for marginalized youth.

Challenge

Children living in care are required to live independently at 18, and begin to manage every aspect of their lives. With fewer opportunities for experiential learning due to the limitation of the current child welfare system it is nearly impossible to be fully ready for this sudden & substantial change from the sheltered life in care homes. Many children are overwhelmed by the new problems they encounter: managing their finances, new relationships, social prejudice and the stress of being alone.

Solution

Mirai no Mori programs are designed to equip children with the "essential life skills" they will require to overcome the variety of issues they may face when they become independent and create their own path for the future, including resilience, problem solving skills and communication skills. Through Mirai no Mori programs, the children encounter a unique environment where they can think and act on their own, stepping out of their usual self and demonstrating their own ability and potential.

Long-Term Impact

Mirai no Mori provides unique learning opportunities through residential camps and day programs that support continuous experiential learning. We have a curriculum built to suit different ages and levels, so children can learn at their own speed: we welcome children from 5-15 years old as campers, 16-18 as Leaders in Training participants and 18 above as graduates. Together with your help, children discover new possibilities for themselves, leading to self-actualization and a flourishing future.
