Challenge

Chiapas is one of the states with more indigenous presence and also with the highest percentage of the population in poverty. Currently, children and youth migrate from their communities seeking better living conditions. In the search they face factors that damage their human dignity: serious violations of their human rights, sexual and labor exploitation, affiliation to organized crime, etc. With our project we will directly benefit children and young people of 8 communities in Lacandon Jungle.

Solution

Xilotl provides accompaniment and promotes the implementation of alternatives to prevent the migration of communities, creating artistic and cultural spaces that strengthen the sense of belonging and cultural identity, as well as contributing to the diversification of their food sources (family and school orchards), and promoting entrepreneurial proposals for young people. Activities will also be carried out for the protection and conservation of their natural resources.

Long-Term Impact

In a period of 6 months, 1,500 children and young people will be benefited, and they will be trained as change's agents in their communities to ensure long-term benefits, through the implementation of economic, social, cultural and environmental initiatives, and we will provide the tools to improve their living conditions according to their particular needs in their communities, avoiding future emigration.
