On Sept. 19, 2017, Mexico City and surroundings, including Morelos and Puebla, suffered devastation from a 7.1M earthquake. Hundreds were killed and countless homes, schools, and community buildings were destroyed. This followed an 8.1M quake in Oaxaca and Chiapas on Sept. 7. This fund was created to provide immediate relief to survivors in the form of food, shelter, water, and medicine. In addition, it is now supporting longer-term assistance to help residents recover and rebuild.
Immediate relief efforts provided by this fund ensured that survivors and first responders received critical resources, including food, housing, medical aid, water, and psychosocial care. Earthquake-affected families are now on the long journey to rebuilding their communities and re-establishing their livelihoods.
All donations to this fund will support the ongoing recovery and relief efforts for these two earthquakes in Mexico. Initially, the fund helped first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, medical care, and shelter. This fund is now dedicated to supporting longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations across Mexico.
We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like these. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.
We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.
They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
