Challenge

Nepal has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Community-based reports show that suicide is the leading killer among women of reproductive age. Huge levels of stigma surround mental health. Human rights abuses are common and factors such as gender discrimination, violence, and child marriage, put girls & women at considerably higher risk of experiencing mental illness. There are very few mental health professionals, so support is often nonexistent.

Solution

This project will train and upskill community nurses and health workers, with mental healthcare skills, to enable them to provide mental health support in their communities. This approach creates a long-term sustainable, cost-effective solution to the lack of mental health professionals without reliance on external agencies. Jaya's team in Nepal will deliver comprehensive training and awareness programs to tackle the stigma that surrounds mental health.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of this project will be to empower communities to take care of their mental health and provide support for families affected by mental illness. Community Mental health support will reduce rates of suicide and enable people experiencing mental health issues to improve their living conditions and wellbeing. Providing mental health support will ensure women can continue working and girls can stay in education and enable people to improve their quality of life.
