Our students work phenomenally hard and are under immense pressure from themselves, their families and sponsors, to succeed academically. Young people can understandably often find these expectations crushing. This fundraising campaign is to enable Makomborero to continue to provide access to professional mental health support for all our internal and external students.
At the best of times teenage years are often filled with angst as these young people try and discover the adults they will become. Our students work very hard under immense pressure from themselves, their families and sponsors, to enable them to break free from the cycle of poverty in Zimbabwe. These expectations can be crushing, especially when compounded by the trauma of the knocks life has already dealt them. The risk of depression, low self-esteem, burnout and other issues is very real.
Mental health and well-being are vital components of the well-rounded confident individuals Makomborero is nurturing. The funds raised here will enable our students to access the 'Making Sense of Your Worth' programme. The combination of group sessions and in person support MSOYW provides helps our students cope with the unique pressures they face as young Zimbabweans.
Self-worth is the foundation of who you are as a person. Research has shown that people with positive self-worth tend to be socially competent, persistent, creative and crucially ask for help when they need it. The odds of our students succeeding and avoiding the pitfalls of the pressure put on their young shoulders, are increased exponentially by access to this sort of support. Their success positively impacts the circumstances of their families as they face the challenges of life in Zimbabwe.
