Makomborero started its work in 2011 to see lives changed through education. Providing A-level education to talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We provide 17 internal students with pastoral care, food & educational resources. We support 16 external students with fees for schooling & exams. In 2018 we set up a Girl Mentorship Programme, to help the girl child access education past Form 2. We also offer a local University grant scheme for those who don't get scholarships abroad.
Zimbabwe is in political & economic turmoil, with families struggling to survive, let alone pay for an education for their children. There has been an increase of deaths from HIV & AIDS and stress-related illnesses, leading to many orphaned children. The drop-out rates in schools is very high, particularly with girls, due to the cultural pressures & expectations put on them. Access to A-level education is very limited & often deserving students never make it that far. We bridge that gap.
We take students who could never be afford to write their A-levels but have incredible potential. We see students flourish under the multi-faceted, private education that they receive, as well as seeing them blossom under the nurturing care at the Resource Centre. Our external students also flourish, with the financial burden removed from their families. By focusing on a few students, we produce a very high calibre of student, students who learn to adjust to 2 very different cultures.
Makomborero has changed the lives of many families, more than 100 over the past 8 years, with families lifted out of poverty by empowering 1 of their children. We see the students support their families either through entrepreneurial means or their stipends. Our first students graduate from University this year & we know that they are destined for great things. In the short time they are with us we instil a passion for Zimbabwe & know they will make a huge impact on the future of this nation.
