Due to various social and cultural contexts, girls are treated differently than boys from the beginning of childhood in our society. As a result, they tend to become shy, and find it hard to express themselves.
“Mam, Rita needs a sanitary napkin, could you please provide a piece of napkin for her?” Because use of sanitary pad among girl students in village is new as well as they are not used to with it, students are shy and seeks help from their fellow colleague to get a pad from me, said Ms. Pramila Ghimire, Teacher of Shree Gothbhyanjyang Higher Secondary School, where we completed the construction of girls friendly toilet. With the support of District Education Office Lalitpur, we received a box of sanitary pad for our school. I organized a small demonstration on how to use the sanitary napkin, how to manage it after its use, and distributed a set of pad to around 75 girls students studying in grade 8 to 10. I also directed students from grade 6 and 7 to ask me if they need it, Ms Pramila Ghimire added.
After the distribution of sanitary pad to the girls in school and with the help of Ms. Pramila madam through providing proper orientation and guidance on how to use it, the use of girls friendly toilet has increased. This activity has been highly effective towards supporting in safe menstrual hygiene among girls students in our school. We the teachers of Shree Gothbhyanjyang HSS thank ECCA for supporting this initiation in our school, said Mr. Laxmi Timilsina, Head Teacher of School.
With the feedback received from the teachers of Gothbhyanjyang School and request received from other school, the expansion of the activities in schools of Lalitpur District and Kavre District is being planned. Feedbacks like support of Sanitary Pad for students and proper orientation on how to use it were also received which are under review and will be implemented as per need.
