Medical Support for Lesvos Vulnerable Refugees

Greetings from Pikpa Camp LeSol
Greetings from Pikpa Camp LeSol

Where have we been up to so far

Since 2016 Lesvos Solidarity (LeSol) has been actively supporting the vulnerable refugee population that arrives in the island of Lesvos. LeSol aims to inspire society and to expand its solidarity model which promotes equality, trust, respect for each other and for the environment, creativity, empowerment and active participation. Apart from supporting shelter for the refugees in need, LeSol also offers on-site medical care, free psychological and psychosocial support, legal support, transportation, food, clothing, hygiene products and other NFIs, as well as integration and vocational training. Currently, LeSol operates in PIKPA camp, Mosaik and in Asklipios.

We are supporting people suffering serious medical and mental conditions (PTSD, depression, anxiety) victims of torture and violence, large families with children, pregnant women, newborns, LGBTQI+, lone women and men, and victims of shipwrecks who lost loved ones at sea. LeSol also offers integration and vocational training for both the refugees and the local community. These workshops allow refugees to learn and share new skills, work alongside the locals and participate in the life of the community. The workshops that support these activities are the Safe Passage-Bags workshop, the Humade upcycling workshop as well as various language and IT and classes that are held in Mosaik.

We always fight to find new ways to break the fear and xenophobia and create bridges supporting both locals and refugees as we did from the first moment of Lesvos Solidarity operation, in order to keep the refugee population of PIKPA safe during their staying on the island from attacks by far right organisations. We are trying our best to keep PIKPA a safe space for its residents. Since the previous years we are facing a constant rise of the xenophobic. In February, along with other solidarity organisations and individuals, volunteers of Lesvos Solidarity were attacked and our vehicle used to transfer refugees to hospitals and clinics was vandalised. Even one of our founding members, Efi Latsoudi, was personally targeted by far-right perpetrators, and she bravely took her attackers to court and won the case!

In March of 2020 we had another threat to overcome, this time affecting the health of our residents and the local community. It was the Coronavirus pandemic which took the world by surprise, as no
one was prepared for the magnitude of it . As Pikpa camp hosts the most vulnerable refugees and families with children, we had to respond to the urgent needs arising from a potential COVID-19 outbreak in our local community. In order to protect the residents of the camp and the locals we have created isolation shelters in case that people are affected by COVID-19 and follow the national suggested guidelines.

In the meantime, we are pleased to announce our collaboration and partnership with UNICEF in order to accommodate 30 unaccompanied minors from Moria camp, where their life and protection has reached the highest risk in the overpopulated Moria camp, not only by violence but also from the pandemic. This emergency fund covers the 80% of the program expenses regarding the very basic needs of the minors, but we decided to develop a full services shelter with high standards of safety and security as well as educational and cultural activities for the minors. We believe that a safe and creative environment is necessary for children that have experienced Moria camp and the healing transitional period before their transfer to the mainland or their reunification with their families is very crucial.

We are truly grateful for your contribution to the cost of providing medical care and assistance to Pikpa’s residents. Our on-site nurse at the moment is Manolis, who used to be a volunteer at LeSol and is now at full time capacity to our camp thanks to your support. He is providing our beneficiaries with the medical care they need in the spirit of solidarity, dignity and love. Manolis is giving his best everyday treating the residents of Pikpa camp, whose population increased the last few months, so the need for an additional nurse is now a reality. Additionally, with your generous contribution through this campaign we were able to employ two additional full time nurses in order to accommodate the needs of the minors and of the rest Pikpa’s residents. We are counting on your kind support that allows us to continue providing medication, vaccinations, appointments with clinics for important tests and treatment, transportation to public hospitals and public medical clinics, as well as to fund the salaries of our medical team.

The past months have been truly demanding for us and we were forced to adapt and strengthen our operations so we can continue to provide to our beneficiaries the same level of services as we always do. For the strength that we gather by your support and your active solidarity towards us, we thank you!

Medical Expenses

Since our last report on GlobalGiving, with your amazing support we have collected the amount of $2,065.84, that was used to cover the medical costs of the services needed for the vulnerable refugees of our camp.

With your help we have hosted the following population. The following data on our beneficiaries are from March 2019 to June 2020.

We truly hope that this brief report gave you a clear insight to our operations. Your generous donations are making our dream of providing dignified accommodation and care to refugees in need, a reality.

Once again, the whole team of LeSol would like to thank each one of you and the GlobalGiving Platform for the support and solidarity you are showing us. Thanks to all of you we are able to protect and take care of the vulnerable refugee children and adults in the island of Lesvos.

With our kind regards,

The Team of Lesvos Solidarity
