Thank you very much for supporting our project in Nicaragua to Make Maternal Homes Healthier and Happier Places. Global Links has been busy over the last several months prepping a special part of the materials for this project. We're working with our volunteers to prepare Welcome Baby Kits for the new mothers in the maternal homes. These kits, full of important newborn care items, are used as an incentive to encourage more women to utilize the services of the maternal homes to ensure a happy and healthy delivery for both mom and child.
We are well on our way to supplying the first 500 kits this year. In December we hosted a Family Volunteering Day at our headquarters where families with children of all ages helped us pack the kits full of clothes, diapers, blankets, and hygiene items. With tremendous support from our community, and many first-time volunteers, we were able to prepare more than 170 kits for these new moms.
We have received additional support from several community groups, faith-based organizations, local small businesses, and our dedicated volunteer base to supply the rest of the items needed and pack them for shipment to the maternal homes.
In Nicaragua, the first delivery of nutritional meals is being processed for distribution to the maternal homes. Nicaraguan health officials are managing the timing of deliveries to meet the different needs in each region.
Our partnership has garnered press coverage by local media outlets and has been featured on the Pan American Health Organization’s website. This spring, we will continue to collect materials for the Welcome Baby Kits from the regional hospital systems and through donations from the public in order to meet the 500 kit goal later this year.
With one additional shipment of nutritional meals scheduled in 2016 along with delivering the Welcome Baby Kits, your continued support of this project is more important than ever. With proper medical care and a nutritious diet, new moms and their babies will have a happier and healthier start of their life together.
On behalf of all the communities we serve, thank you for making a world of difference.
