The provision of proper resources for children to play is essential in creating opportunities for children’s holistic development and sporting development can clearly offer a brighter future for many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with a specific sports based talent that can be nurtured if the right chance is given.
As UNICEF highlights South Africa has a clear love for sport and communities can be united, through sports events and programmes. The benefits derived from playing sport extend beyond health and fitness. Participants learn important social skills such as teamwork, commitment and leadership.
This particular project also has the added benefit that, whilst being a resource for all the children at our youth centre, it specifically targets a need that we have identified in our young women and girls that can help open doors for them.
The right to freedom of association through sport is enshrined in South Africa’s Bill of Rights; legislation, which most recently in 2012 made providing accessible sports infrastructure a government priority. However to see this multi-purpose court become a reality at our project we truly need your support in spreading the word and seeing if we can get the financial backing and sponsorship needed to see this come to fruition.
Please get behind this project in whatever way you can and make sporting opportunities come to life!
