Sport is huge in South Africa. South Africa’s recent history has many iconic moments for sports fans – from the 1995 Rugby World Cup Triumph to the hosts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup where we were all encouraged to wave our flags!
Fortunately the Bafana Bafana football team booked their place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations presenting with another opportunity to get the country behind them! And now we can look at Nike’s latest advert shining a spotlight on female athletes who have broken barriers. And who is leading the field in that regard? South African athlete Caster Semenya, an inspiring heroine for many aspiring young athletes in the making.
Now we can see who is giving the motivation to some of our young girls who are literally flying when it comes to athletic achievement! Our oldest girl went from running and shot putt provincial finals and medalist in Umtata to representing the Eastern Cape in COSACSA National Athletics...the college track and field championship in Gauteng (part of the PE TVET College team)...and she came back with a SILVER MEDAL! At the national championships! What an absolute SUPERSTAR! Soon after this another young star came back from school with a gold medal for high jump...beaming with pride of course!
Then we have also been wrapped up with the IRON MAN spirit because the BIG event – IRONMAN AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – took place here in Port Elizabeth with a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run. Well in the spirit of this we had our biggest team to date take part in the IRON KIDS event where they also swam and ran their way through to their medals! A record 6 girls formed part of the team we had taking part!
So what’s stopping our kids becoming future Iron Man athletes themselves? We just truly need the support to establish the cycling track and swimming pool infrastructure on our grounds to ensure we can invest in the sporting development of children and young people right through their time staying with us.
The futures bright…waka waka, this time for Africa!
