It is always a powerful moment when you hear a crowd start singing the South Africa National Anthem. There is something special about the song, from the opening line of "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" through to the final crescendo of "let us live and strive for freedom, in South Africa our land!'
It really is a song that unifies people.
I was reminded of it again most recently as we marked "Freedom Day" as a public holiday in South Africa, commemorating the historic elections that took place back in 1994.
What remains clear in a South African context is that quality education remains essential to attaining true freedom and brighter futures for the next generation.
Yet again we are experiencing a high level of need. Just this week we had 3 young brothers arrive age 3-6. This now takes us to 8 children in the Early Childhood Development bracket, which we know is a vital phase for education and stimulation.
But of course the first and most important thing is to show love and care as we help them to settle into their new home.
And at least as we look at their infectious smiles we know that with the targeted support and services we can offer we are seeing young people transition successfully into adulthood fulfilling their full potential!
The other wonderful news that we recently recieved was that one of our young people who recieved a degree standard pass on his matric (A-Levels) has been accepted and commenced Bachelor of Law studies through the University of South Africa.
After having been with us at the centre for over 10 years it is a wonderful result and positive outcome to see happen. And it is also wonderful that through our independent living program we still provide a supportive living environment for these youth meaning we have beneficiaries ranging from 2-22 at our centre!
