Early and unintended pregnancy is a growing major public health and social concern in Tanzania. By engaging with child mothers and young women at risk in Tanzania, FORWARD aims to improve this issue. We intend to reach 50 child mothers directly through the leadership and economic entrepreneurship training. An additional 50 young women will be reached through the outreach activities. This project will empower child mothers and girls at risk to fulfill their right to development and education.
Teenage pregnancy continues to be a significant public health issue in Tanzania. A high proportion of pregnancies among adolescent girls aged 15- 19 years are unintended. The 2015 Demographic Health Survey Report found that more than one in four adolescents aged 15-19 have begun childbearing. Young and child mothers often experience multiple forms of violence with multiple health and social consequences, including loss of educational opportunities. FORWARD wants to address this.
This project will resolve this problem by empowering child mothers and girls at risk to fulfill their right to development and education. To achieve this, the project will for example: - Empower young women and mothers as leaders who can influence and shape decisions about their rights and entitlements -Child mothers have safe spaces that enable them to build life skills and assets and access related entitlements - Child mothers have improved life options and greater economic independence
FORWARD's approach of working with local project partners in Africa and the UK is about establishing a long-term impact and engagement through mentoring, capacity development and enabling local partners to also build capability and motivate young women through leadership training. As for those who will benefit, we intend to reach 50 child mothers directly through the leadership training and economic entrepreneurship. An additional 50 young women will be reached through the outreach actions.
