In December 2018, our founder, Dr Kate Yarrow, treasurer, Nigel Lewers, and administrator, Cesca Eaton, went to Kathmandu for the annual Trustee visit. It is very important for us to stay connected with our “DFN family” in Nepal, and the time we spend with them each year, face-to-face, is absolutely invaluable. We held various meetings and workshops, including how to make “video diaries” from remote hospitals. Plus, the use of social media, and logging of cases to show productivity.
Our newest and youngest medical student, Santosh (18), has recently passed his 1st Year exams with flying colours, gaining marks in the top percentage in all categories. He and his classmates were then sent out into the community to a local medical post where Santosh interviewed a number of patients, doctors and nurses. He also volunteered at a local school, helping to teach the children Maths. He is now back at his medical school working hard – here’s Santosh’s own account of his experiences:
“The most important thing is that I passed my exam with good marks. After my exam we were posted to health post to know about the health condition in Nepal, where we conducted interviews with different people. I got lots of chance to interview with great people. Now I have entered in respiratory block which runs for 5 weeks, then I will enter in cardiovascular block and the combine exam of this two block takes place.”
Santosh is well on his journey to become a great doctor like Dr Lalit, Dr Nahakul and Dr Meena, who all continue to work extremely hard - Lalit in Cairo with his post-graduate work and Nahakul and Meena back in their remote villages as doctors. Meena is one of only 3 doctors at her remote hospital in Mugu district. She hopes to gain a long-term contract in the hospital so that she can make a difference on a more senior and managerial level. Since September she has carried out 4 Caesarean sections - all with successful outcomes.
