Annual Report on Maison de la Gare’s work for the talibé children
Maison de la Gare's mission is to improve the living conditions of vulnerable talibé children, and to give them hope of a better future.
These children live in extreme poverty. They are often exploited by their Koranic masters and exposed to all kinds of dangers. Maison de la Gare provides support and works to remedy this injustice. The exclusion and marginalization of talibé children is a brutal denial of their rights as children. We provide solutions.
Our Annual Report for the year 2024 presents our progress. We invite you to read it, at this link.
It is your support that makes this possible. Well over half of our funding – 551 individual donations in 2024 – comes from you through GlobalGiving in the US and Europe, and through CanadaHelps and the C.F. Johnston Foundation in Canada.
These are highlights from the year:
- We registered 2,493 talibé children entering our center, with an average of 2,560 visits each month.
- 143 children whom we rescued from the streets found refuge in our emergency shelter before being reintegrated into secure situations.
- We treated on average 476 children each month in our infirmary for cuts, wounds, scabies, dental and vision problems, burns, diarrhea, malaria, and broken limbs. We also made 91 visits to the daaras where the children live, providing 1,938 treatments there.
- We gave basic education instruction to an average of 36 children each day in our three classrooms.
- 33 older talibés were trained in our poultry farming and tailoring apprenticeship programs.
- We granted 54 microfinance loans totaling $18,465 US during the year, 13 of these to older and former talibés.
- We welcomed 68 volunteers during the year for stays of 1 to 12 weeks. They made invaluable contributions to all our programs and enriched the live of the children we serve.
We thank you sincerely for your steadfast support. Thanks to you, we can offer talibé children a future full of possibilities. Together, we prepare them for productive and fulfilling lives, filled with hope and dignity. Your commitment makes all the difference.
