We're EXCITED to build the LRC Annex which includes a Library to house our 10000+ book collection with a "kiddie" reading corner, study carrels, and reading seating, a Sound Studio/Radio Station, and office and meeting Space. This LRC Annex allows for the renovation of the current Learning Resource Center to create a Maker Space. This project provides dynamic enrichment programs to the 18,000 students, 500 teachers and their families in our rural Kenyan community.
Our programs have grown and our staff has expanded! When we opened the Learning Resource Center in 2012 we had a staff of three. We now have a team of 12 and our program reach has significantly increased. Partnering with 61 schools representing 18,000 students and 500 teachers has put pressure on our existing space. These students are in desperate need of technology and literacy enrichment and teachers are requesting professional development programs.
The LRC Annex and LRC renovations will provide new space for workshops, programs and learning. An innovative "Maker Space" will include sewing machines, art supplies, a computer cart and robotics materials. A sound studio/radio station housed in the space will allow for a new mode of reaching students while providing educational experiences for them. A "proper" library housing our 10,000 books will provide students, teachers and community members the opportunity to borrow books and read.
The LRC Annex and Library will educate 18,000 students, 500 teachers and community members through providing innovative programs, workshops, and resources at the LRC Annex and Library. This project will lift the community out of extreme poverty through the power of education. This dynamic space will spark creativity, micro-enterprises and improved modes of learning.
