The support you have provided has helped us to maintain the care we provide in a State-run Baby Home. There are currently 47 babies (birth to 4 years) in 5 groups plus another 2 groups where 25 children visit for rehabilitation only on a one month programme.
All the babies have some form of developmental delays – no surprise as parents would be alcohol or drug addicts or extremely poor. Often the babies are fearful of all men – fathers beat them and their mums and there are no men in the home. We saw this for ourselves recently on a visit when one little girl cowered away from us three men.
Our two "implant" workers have been there for 12 years and in that time have built the trust of the State staff and substantially added value.
We have one group under our direction – ideally we would have staff in each group. In our group the children can play and have fun – others have little play and have an enforced disciple.
When the children move up from our group they cry to come back. Whilst the other rooms are in good repair ours show signs of wear and tear as the babies are free to play. In other rooms they just sit!
Your support helps us to provide diapers for all the children in the Home who need them – the government provides them for disabled children but not others. So we provide 2,400 diapers a month – 2 for each child in need per day. But our staff member has to mark each diaper with a number and a name so she knows that the child will get its diaper.
Giving these babies love and care at this early age can only help to create some foundation of what we must pray will be a better future than they could otherwise face.
