JEN assists returnee families in rebuilding their lives in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. Since 2023, more than 2.5 million Afghans have returned from Pakistan, and most have come home with no way to earn a living. Over three years, JEN is supporting vulnerable returnee households with business training and start-up tools: sewing kits for women and vending carts for men. These families already have the skills and the will to rebuild. Support us in reaching more families.
Afghanistan faces an unprecedented crisis: nearly half its population, 22.9 million people, needs humanitarian assistance. Since 2023, over 2.5 million Afghans have returned from Pakistan, most to already-overstretched Nangarhar Province. The major earthquake in 2025 pulled assistance toward emergency response, leaving returnees without livelihood support. Without income, returnee families risk poverty, straining host communities, while new restrictions make it harder for women to work.
We identify the most vulnerable households in Nangarhar Province and give around 10 households business training and start-up tools - sewing kits for women, vending carts for men - with monitoring for lasting success. We will also collaborate with local businesses and vendors who are willing to offer employment or contract work to the beneficiaries.
The project will provide individuals who are in extremely vulnerable situations, including single mothers, with opportunities to gain business knowledge, aiming to support their path toward self-reliance. As they integrate into their communities, they will contribute to easing social tension and food insecurity, building a stable local economy across Nangarhar Province.
