More than 30 years ago, three committed physicians specializing in the care of immigrants at the border formed the Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) with the dream of creating a resource network for physicians exclusively run by physicians. Throughout the decades, what began as a dream has evolved into a vital resource for frontline clinicians across the globe. In February 2020, MCN chose to return to the heart of the foundation’s original mission by bringing the Witness to Witness (W2W) Program, developed by Kaethe Weingarten, Ph.D., under MCN’s programmatic umbrella of providing health justice for all.
Few could have anticipated just how vital the work W2W would prove to be at the time. Less than three weeks after W2W joined MCN, the United States, like the rest of the world, was caught in the grip of the pandemic, arguably the most significant public health catastrophe in modern times, overwhelming health care systems across the globe. In America, the struggle to contain COVID-19 and manage the condition’s impact on living generated an entirely separate crisis, particularly for the clinicians clocking in hours of grueling work at the frontline.
Two years later, life is—somewhat—returning to a pace that more closely resembles how the world worked before the great pause the pandemic ushered in. Yet the consequences linger on. Recently, Dr. Weingarten addressed a growing phenomenon of individuals experiencing increasing frustration about their lives with the perception “that they are stuck in a rut that they cannot get out of.” Laying the blame for these conditions squarely on COVID, the email blast offered several tips on coping with the malaise a rut can create, such as introducing variety and even encouraging some spontaneous impulsivity.
Beyond communications with constituents, W2W remains engaged in providing education emphasizing excellence. In the month of March, W2W offered a series of online seminars. The most popular of these, “How to be Supportive During a Crisis,” the third in a series sponsored by the American Rescue Plan Grant, provided 90 minutes of learning to more than 160 people, all of whom stayed until the very end. During the webinar, interaction in the Chat was high; Dr. Weingarten was able to create new material from participants’ contributions. Notably, the evaluation scores were high: the audience gave a total satisfaction rating of 4.82 out of 5 for the webinar and associated materials.
W2W remains committed to cultivating an ethic of care, compassion, and connection for frontline clinicians. In addition to online seminars, W2W has also provided learning collaboratives exploring the intersections of vulnerability, migrant health, and COVID-19. Earlier this month, this included developing a module addressing the impact on healthcare workers of addressing intimate partner violence among farmworker communities during the pandemic. Future learning collaboratives will focus on helping managers enhance the well-being of those they manage.
Other projects currently in development include a podcast, which will seek to address a myriad of topics along the spectrum of stress and hope. Additionally, Dr. Weingarten intends to continue expanding her writing across multiple channels by maintaining her monthly email blasts, writing for MCN’s blog, Clinician-to-Clinician: A Forum for Health Justice, and adding spotlights for Streamline, MCN’s quarterly clinical publication that delivers critical information and resources to a constituency of more than 6,000 frontline clinicians.
