The project would empower tribal women and children in 22 villages of Bihar, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh in India through solar lighting.The project will set up solar charging stations in unelectrified villages,managed by trained tribal women renting solar lanterns to the villagers at a nominal fee thus providing livelihood to these women.The smoke free solar lanterns would also affect the level of empowerment, education, literacy, health and economic opportunities in these hamlets
Around 61 million rural households in India depend upon kerosene to meet lighting needs. Access to clean lighting is key to better quality of living, livelihood, income generation and overall development of these rural households. It has special significance for women and girl children as it affects them the most. The project would benefit more than 5000 tribal women and children belonging to various tribal hamlets in India
Lighting a Billion Lives initiative seeks to provide high-quality and cost effective solar lanterns disseminated through solar charging stations set-up in un-electrified or poorly electrified villages. Trained tribal woman will operate and manage the charging stations and rent charged lanterns every evening, for a affordable fee to the villagers. They will also be trained to repair and sell the solar lanterns to further enhance their income
Empower more than 3000 tribal women by facilitating income generating activities through solar lighting such as tailoring, basket making, weaving etc Facilitate longer studying hours for more than 2000 tribal girl children who are usually busy during the day with household activities Develop entrepreneurial skills of more than 20 tribal women by training them to become solar entrepreneurs Displace kerosene and paraffin lanterns with solar lighting devices
