Lifetime clean water for Tarahumara Community

In a small community nestled deep in Mexico’s Sierra Tarahumara, surrounded by mountains, pine forests, and winding dirt roads, a young Rarámuri girl begins her day.

The sun is barely rising over the mountains. The morning air is cold, and while many children elsewhere are still asleep, her family has already begun its daily activities.

Before she can think about playing or getting ready for school, there is something her family must take care of: finding water.

In her community, there are no pipes bringing running water into homes. Getting water is not as simple as turning on a faucet.

They must walk.

Sometimes, the journey is long. The narrow paths cross rugged terrain, leading to a stream or a small natural spring. The water they find is not always clean, but it is what they have available for drinking, cooking, and meeting their daily needs.

The little girl watches her mother carry heavy containers. Sometimes, she helps too, carrying whatever her small hands can manage.

This is a reality that many families in the Sierra Tarahumara have faced for generations.

But a little girl's childhood should be filled with opportunities to learn, explore, play, and dream.

When Rain Brings More Than Water

Now, imagine that one day, something changes in her home.

Her family, working alongside CAPTAR's team, installs a rainwater harvesting system.

A roof to collect the rain, gutters to channel it, a storage tank to hold it, and a filter to help make the water safe to drink.

When the rainy season arrives, the first drops begin to fall.

Water that once flowed away into the mountains can now be collected and stored for her family.

The little girl hears the rain differently.

It is no longer just the sound of raindrops falling on a metal roof. It is the promise of having water closer to home.

Her mother can spend less time making exhausting trips to collect water. Her family has better conditions for preparing meals, practicing hygiene, and caring for their health.

And the little girl can regain something that should never be lost during childhood:

Time.

Time to play.

Time to learn.

Time to be with her family.

Time to discover who she wants to become.

Behind Every Water System, There Is a Story

On October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child, we honor the girls growing up in the most remote communities of the Sierra Tarahumara.

Girls with a rich cultural heritage, remarkable potential, and dreams that deserve every opportunity to flourish.

Their childhood should not be defined by the distance they must travel to find water.
