Welcome to the New Year.
As we look back at 2015, we’re proud of all that was accomplished during our second year of operation in Cambodia. To date, we’ve collected some 20,000 pounds of soap, which translated into 150,000 soap donations.
We’re also excited to share that our two new Eco-Soap Banks in Phnom Penh and the coastal town of Sihanoukville have officially commenced operations. Our rationale for launching in these two locations was twofold. Firstly, opening facilities in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville allowed us to expand our reach to vulnerable rural and slum communities in the southern region of the country. Prior to the launch, our work was limited to communities in northern Cambodia. Secondly, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville are among the most popular tourist destinations in the country after Siem Reap, where our first bank currently operates. Each year, millions of people travel to Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville to take in the rich cultural history of the capital and to relax on the sunkissed beaches. Prior to our entry into these cities, unused hotel soap was being funneled into the trash.
The success of these new banks has been possible largely through the support of our NGO and corporate partners. In Phnom Penh, we have joined forces with Sealed Air, which has provided livelihood support and recycling equipment, as well as Indochina Starfish Foundation, which has helped us to employ two disadvantaged families living in Phnom Penh slums through their "Earn as you Learn” program. In Sihanoukville, our partnership with the Goodwill Center—a community center for children in the coastal town—allows us to provide dependable income to five adult women that have children attending the center.
Our goal for 2016 is to provide a steady supply of soap for over 250,000 Cambodians in need of hygiene resources in order to help them remain free of preventable illnesses. We look forward to sharing more milestones as we work toward this goal in the weeks and months ahead.
