Health Heroes Strengthening Rural Northern Uganda

In the remote villages we serve in Northern Uganda, healthcare often begins at home — with a trusted Village Health Team (VHT) member. Through your support, we are currently working with 20 VHTs, attached to our two health facilities, who serve as the first point of contact for families living miles away from formal care.

Recently, during a community visit, one VHT identified a two-year-old child with persistent fever and poor appetite. Using a malaria rapid test kit supplied through this project, the volunteer confirmed malaria and immediately began treatment while arranging referral to our facility for further assessment. The child recovered well. In the same month, VHTs mobilized mothers for immunization outreaches, conducted nutritional assessments for children under five and pregnant women, and treated minor illnesses such as diarrhoea using ORS. Their monthly and quarterly reports continue to strengthen coordination between the community and our clinics.

Over time, trust has grown deeply. Community members now actively seek advice from their VHTs on sanitation, maternal health, and disease prevention. The Parish Leader who heads the 20 man team shares that the team remains committed but faces challenges such as limited medical supplies, refresher training needs, and logistical constraints. Despite these obstacles, they continue serving tirelessly because they believe no one should be left behind.

Your support is helping build a network of local health heroes who are saving lives every day and strengthening the rural health system from within. Thank you for standing with these communities and making lifesaving care possible where it is needed most.
