Libya Flood Emergency Response

Urda continues to deliver the needed aid to the needy families affected by the flood in Libya.

One of the case studies that touched our hearts in Abo Khalid's story: 

Abu Khaled, a displaced resident from Derna, has been deeply affected by the recent catastrophic floods. Since the disaster, he has been living with his wife and three children in a temporary shelter provided by a relative in a small house on the outskirts of the city. Before the floods, Abu Khaled lost his job, and the family’s financial situation worsened after they lost their home and possessions in the disaster.

The family faces numerous challenges, including the lack of a stable home, difficulty in securing basic necessities, and uncertainty about the future. Abu Khaled struggles to provide for his family, especially as the price of food and essential items continues to rise. The children’s education has also been disrupted due to their displacement.

Recently, Abu Khaled traveled to a distribution center set up by the team, where food baskets were being provided as part of the project’s relief efforts. The journey was difficult due to the damaged roads and lack of transportation, but he managed to arrive at the distribution point. Upon arrival, he was greeted by volunteers who provided him with food supplies, including vegetable oil, flour, rice, and beans.

Abu Khaled expressed deep gratitude for the assistance, explaining that the food baskets would help his family survive for the coming weeks. He acknowledged that the support from STACO has been critical in helping them meet their immediate needs. However, he highlighted that his family still faces significant challenges, particularly with finding stable housing and securing a steady income.

Abu Khaled’s story illustrates the ongoing hardships faced by displaced families in Derna. While the relief provided by the project has been invaluable, longer-term solutions are necessary to address housing, income stability, and access to education for his children.

In an urgent response to the flood In Libya, and with the generous donations of all the donors, our teams on the ground were able to continue supporting the affected Libyans.

Thousands of families, from elderly, women, and children got displaced with no breadwinner! These families were left with no food, thus the food parcel distributions came on time to ease the hardships of these families.

One of the mothers said that she used to have a burden on what she would feed her children, however with the food packages distribution her hope in life was restored! 

Our teams make sure to do two types of distributions.

The first type is a collective distribution where the beneficiaries come to the distribution point after an assessment has been done by our team to choose the neediest families.

The second type of distribution is door-to-door distribution where our teams check on the families by themselves.
