Access to books is a privilege that we often take for granted. Almost every city in the US has a public library and it costs nothing to walk in, pick out an armful of books to take home and return in a couple of weeks. Similarly, there are books and magazines in many stores, even the book aisle in a grocery store. With such a wealth of books in our country, would it surprise you to know that most children in India do not have such a luxury?
We believe every child should have the simple pleasure of books to read at any time. Reading builds vocabulary, enhances a child’s understanding of the world around them and ignites their imagination.
Our goal is to provide 28 orphanages throughout India with encyclopedias and recreational books as the start of their very own library. We want the orphaned, abandoned, and unwanted children being cared for to experience the thrill of reading and learning through the written word.
With the help of GlobalGiving donors we are on our way to providing one orphanage with a full library and we will continue to raise money for this project to put books in all 28 orphanages that World’s Children supports in India.
There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates’ loot on Treasure Island. — Walt Disney
