Menstruation Hygiene Awareness Raising Program

By Reika Kudo | Project Leader

With the money we raised from GlobalGiving, we are planning to equip school in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur Districts with better and safer facilities for menstrual hygiene.

First, in coordination with School Management Team, we will work closely with students of Grade 9 and 10 in 4 schools. Students will be trained on MHM (puberty, menstruation, hygiene during periods, hygienic and non-hygienic materials to use, and health risks associated with poor menstrual hygiene, the menstrual cycle, school sanitation in relation to MHM, myths and culture on MHM). From these students, a core team will be formed. During the workshop, sanitary napkin and disposable bins will be provided.

Next, we would form a “Surakshya Club” to prepare junior Grades regarding the menstruation hygiene. “Surakshya Club” will consist of 6 committee members. ICA Nepal will raise a fund (Rs. 5 from each girl and school will contribute certain amount). With this fund, the club can maintain the hygiene kit and refill the sanitary napkin when necessary. The committee will also work with their school management and parents to improve the availability of resources in their school to improve menstrual hygiene. The club will be encouraged to meet every week and discuss issues such as the how to dispose of the sanitary napkins at school and arranging water and bins in rest rooms. The committee will be encouraged to share and exchange thoughts through interschool sharing.

We are planning to start from the new academic year which starts in April, 2019
