Interns meet with Nepalinjapan.com Editor
By Angel de Leon | Intern at ICAJ
![]()
Last Thursday, the four interns (Panny Tao, Kexin Yu, Beth Holmes, and Angel de Leon) went to Ohanajaya station in Tokyo to meet with the Editor of nepalinjapan.com. They have established a great connection with the editor, Mr. Aananda Korala, on helping ICAJ to disseminate information about #NoChhaupadi. He was joyful that people outside of Nepal were aware of what "chhaupadi" is considering that none of the interns are from Nepal . He even wrote an article about the project in hopes other Nepalese will donate as well as be aware of this ICA project.

On the Global Giving Website, they will their July Bonus Day (on July 18) to match donations made to the #NoChhaupadi projects. Donations starting at $100 to $1000 will be matched while $130,000 in matching funds remain. The more you donate, the higher the match will be! In addition, there will be two $5000 prizes; one for the projects with the most $100+ donors and the second for the project with the most funds raised. This is why we need your help on July 18!
As mentioned, the Chhaupadi practice that is characterized by banishment of women during their usual residence due to alleged impurity is in existence in the mid and far-western regions of Nepal. This tradition has been criticized for violation of basic human rights of women, but also for its associated physical and mental health impacts. Despite being outlawed by the government, this tradition is still exists due to illiteracy, superstitious beliefs, gender disparity and community endorsement of the practice.
As a gentle reminder, the funds raised in this project will go to production of lowcost pads and transformational hygiene education to 5000 young women.

Woman's Napkin Manufacturing (Nepal)
Yesterday, the interns of ICA Japan went to Shin-Okubo station and visited 10 Nepalese restaurants to spread the information about this project. They were able to raise 5152 yen and able to hang posters in each of the restaurants. The Nepalese owners of the restaurants were surprised that they knew about this cause and were happy to donate.
