On November 17-19, 2018 ICA Nepal conducted the Menstrual Hygiene Management awareness program at three villages of Sindhupalchowk and Nuwakot districts named Thankune, Chipling and Digam. These are deemed as rural villages where people have to walk up to 3-4 hours to reach the nearest medical store. The village is dominated by people of Tamang community due to which women of these villages do not have to face menstrual taboos. But women are still struggling with the menstruation related health issues. During our program it was found that girls of age between 12-20 use sanitary napkins while 21- above aged women still use clothes. In spite of being only 4-5 hours far from the capital city, women are afraid and embarrassed to talk about menstruation in front of men.
The awareness program included the topics like hygiene maintenance during menstruation, remedies for period cramps, ingestion of medicine during period cramps and its’ side effects,
way of using sanitary napkins and its’ proper disposal. In the program we also demonstrated how to use sanitary napkins. Our program was also supported by ‘Surakshya Napkin’ which is a Nepal made pads manufactured by local women of Changunarayan Learning Center. We distributed 100 pieces of Surakshya Napkins in three villages. Total 75 participants were benefitted from the awareness program. We also distributed the pamphlets related to menstrual hygiene management to school, men and women of the villages.
Next Spring, with your help, we go further into the countryside bringing awareness and positive change to young women living in the highlands.
