Progress Report: School Library Initiative

By Md. Anisur Rahman | Project Coordinator

1. Project Overview

The School Library Initiative was launched by Green Fund Initiative (GFI), in partnership with BCSSC, to address the lack of basic educational resources among students in a climate-affected region of Bangladesh. The project aims to establish a functional school library to improve literacy, support academic development, and provide access to environmental and general education materials.

2. Objectives

The initiative seeks to develop a school library that:

  • Supports literacy and academic growth
  • Provides access to environmental and reference materials
  • Encourages a culture of reading, curiosity, and resilience among students

3. Progress During the Reporting Period (January – April 2026) 3.1 Funding Status

During this reporting period, the project received a total of $20 in donations. This amount, while modest, was utilized immediately to support initial library-related needs. However, the funding remains insufficient to implement the project at scale, and additional financial support is required to proceed with core activities.

3.2 Activities Implemented

Despite limited funding, the project made small but meaningful progress:

  • The $20 received was fully utilized for preliminary library support (e.g., initial learning materials and minor resource needs)
  • Continued engagement with school authorities to maintain readiness for future implementation
  • Ongoing communication with teachers to refine priority needs for books and furniture
  • Volunteer-led informal discussions with students on the importance of reading and library use

4. Impact

  • Initial steps toward establishing a library have been initiated, demonstrating project progress despite limited resources
  • Continued enthusiasm among students and teachers for the library project
  • Strengthened trust between the organization and the school community
  • Maintained awareness about the importance of reading and educational resources

5. Challenges

  • Severely limited funding, with only $20 received to date
  • Inability to procure essential items such as:
    • Books and reference materials
    • Furniture (tables, chairs, shelves)
  • Delayed establishment of a fully functional library
  • Limited capacity to expand project activities without external funding

6. Next Steps

  • Actively seek additional donations from individuals, donors, and grant-making organizations
  • Continue engagement with the school to sustain motivation and readiness
  • Prioritize procurement of essential materials (books, shelves, furniture) once funding is secured
  • Expand awareness efforts to build community support for the initiative

7. Conclusion

During January–April 2026, the School Library Initiative made modest progress despite ongoing financial constraints. The receipt and utilization of $20 marked an initial step toward project implementation. However, substantial funding is still required to establish a fully functional library.

Green Fund Initiative and BCSSC remain committed to the project and are actively seeking additional donations to move forward. With adequate support, the initiative has strong potential to significantly improve educational opportunities for vulnerable children in the project area.
