Lesotho is facing waves of severe flooding caused by torrential rains from the west and north part of the country, leaving many communities in Maseru district struggling to recover. Floods have caused serious destruction of houses leaving hundreds of people homeless. Livestock and crops died leaving families in serious poverty. The situation is expected to worsen as climate change (floods and heavy snowfall accelerates both in the highlands and lowlands of the country.
Lesotho is faced with persistent flooding worsened by climatic shifts, known for bringing heavy rainfall in the lowlands and snowfall in the highlands that trap and kill hundreds of people, livestock and crops leaving families in a serious state of poverty which takes long time to recover. All donations to this fund will support flood-affected communities in Lesotho, with a priority focus on the most disadvantaged and overlooked communities. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. It will also be utilized for recovering livestock and crops in the affected communities.
The project will support longer-term recovery efforts run within the afftected communities. For its sustainability, it will train 8 frontline workers in the lowlands and highlands of Lesotho and provide them with first aids kids and disaster gear for them to respond immediately whenever there is emergency. It will collaborate with health facilities for quick medical attention for the victims. It will work closely with Disaster Management Unit (DMA) for its long term impact.
