Dear friends and supporters ,

the year is already three months old, and we are looking forward to give you an update on what is happening these days. There is a lot to tell, but see for yourself:

HELP WANTED

We are currently looking for support in our communication team. As our sister organization Digital Lions is progressing with its Fair Trade certification, we are in need for a PR/campaign manager to do a campaign around the topic “Fair Trade goes Digital”. For more details check this out or contact us via Email.

VIRTUAL TOUR OF OUR NEW ICT CAMPUS WITH HEIKO MAAS

It was a privilege to guide Heiko Maas, the German Foreign Minister, on a virtual tour around our new ICT campus during his meeting with Kenya Foreign Minister Awour Omamo (see Twitter post of Auswärtiges Amt). During the tour the Minister was  interacting with our students and asked questions about our program. We are very honored to be recognized by the German government and hope to one day welcome the Minister in person on our Campus.

A LITTLE TOUR OF OUR NEW ICT CAMPUS ON FACEBOOK

Rikard and Bonface give a little tour of the new and modern ICT campus on the shores of Lake Turkana online. Rikard is one of our great volunteers who mentors lions on web development and Bonface is our Lead System Administrator, taking a great care of Learning Lions equipment and systems. They explain a little of the amazing project by KÉRÉARCHITECTURE that is optimally tailored to the needs of an ICT campus in the semi-desert of Turkana: Innovative construction methods (windows, ventilation, second roof) are to create perfect working conditions. The building includes classrooms, co-working place and accommodations for the Lions. You can see the full video of the campus tour on our Facebook page:

I hope you enjoyed this small update from Lodwar and you will stay connected with us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram .

Kwaheri,
Stefanie

Dear friends and supporters,

"Krismasi Njema" - this is the Swahili phrase for "Merry Christmas". With this newsletter we are sending warm Christmas wishes to you and your family and of course also a happy new year. Even though it is still the time of the pandemic there is still a lot happening at Learning Lions. But see for yourself:

LIMITED POSTCARD SERIES TO COLLECT DONATIONS
Matthias, one of our graphic design volunteers, had a great idea to support Learning Lions and designed a limited post card series called "Places & People" that can be used as Christmas card or just as a normal postcard to send warm wishes to friends and family. The set includes five motifs in DINA5 format, and all proceeds will be donated to Learning Lions at the end of the year. Donation should be at least 18€ (incl. postage within Germany, for Europe please donate a little more please). Pictures of the cards are attached to this mail. They can be ordered here: https://www.sonsofipanema.de/placesandpeople

NEW COHORT STARTING AT THE BEGINNING OF NEXT YEAR
In January we are excited to start a new cohort. Currently we are having many interviews will all the interested, motivated, and talented young adults that applied to become a Learning Lion. They are looking forward to becoming a member of our community and to learn the necessary skills to become a graphic-, 3D- or web designer and have a better future by being able to earn their living with the new learned skills.

NEW ICT CAMPUS AT LAKE TURKANA
As we already mentioned on our last reports, we are building a new campus for more than 500 students near the Lake Turkana. And we are making huge progress! Last week the first Lions moved into their new homes and started living and working at the campus. We attached some pictures for you, so you can see what it lookes like.

Interested in volunteering and making a change? You can become part of Learning Lions by helping on site as a volunteer as well as remote and of course by supporting us with a donation. For more information have a look at our website.

I hope you enjoyed this small update and you will stay connected with us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram .

Kwaheri,

Stefanie

Mambo,

we hope you are all doing fine in this challenging time wherever you are. Also, for us, the pandemic is having a big impact on our work and the Lions are currently still working from home to ensure they and their friends and family stay safe and healthy.

Nevertheless, we are trying to focus on the good side and aim to gain some new skills and mindsets that will help us to get through this and come out even stronger. For example, we organize an online coding camp to spread knowledge and interest in IT.
Additionally, we are creating a concept to make our yearly event, Löwenmarsch happening in a way that will keep the participants safe while giving an opportunity to get out on the fresh air, be with others and socialize, exercise, doing good and creating great memories.

CODING CAMP
In October 2020, Learning Lions will offer a 90-minute virtual coding workshop in the Meet & Code platform (www.meet-and-code.org). Our goal is to inspire young people to start loving to code through innovative and creative teaching and, at the same time, spread the word about Learning Lions' mission and work! If you know how to code we are happy to have you join the event as a volunteer

LÖWENMARSCH
On the 5th September you are warmly invited to participate at Löwenmarsch, a fundraising hike that is taking place in the Bavarian alpine upland from Kaltenberg to the beautiful castle Neuschwarnstein. The aim is to hike up to 100 km within 24 h while collecting funds for each kilometer hiked. Even though 100 km is the great goal, it is also possible to join only for a smaller section of the way. More information about how to participate, the safety guidelines and how to donate here: www.löwenmarsch.de .

You see, there is still a lot going on and we would be pleased to meet you at one of our events.

Until then, Kuwa salama (means stay safe in Kiswahili),
Stefanie

Dear friends and supporters,

"tufanaye pamoja" - is the swahili phrase for "let's do this together". For us, it is all about doing things together. Together we are strong and only together we are able to fight poverty in Africa by teaching young adults in Lodwar ICT skills and enable them to earn their living, especially in these difficult times of COVID-19. The path is long, and we want to keep you updated on all the small and big things that are happening on the way.

DIGITAL LIONS PORTFOLIO
Digital Lions are graduated students from our Learning Lions program, which is teaching ICT skills to young adults. They are already using their new skills and offer their services in Web Development, Graphic Design and Video Animation. To have a look at their work, you can check out their webpage! If you want to support these young talents on their journey, you can order their services by dropping an E-Mail to: sales@digitallions.co .

NEW COHORT IN THE KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP
Last year, we have started a new Learning Lions cohort with talents from the Kakuma Refugee Camp and host communities. We were very happy to be supported by a lot of different partners during this amazing project: GIZ, Turkana county government, National government through Department of refugee affairs, Provincial administration, UNHCR KENYA youth leaders and refugee communities. The aim is to sustainably fight poverty in the region by teaching ICT skills and opening up a world with good job opportunities in the ICT section. Last month the students graduated successfully from our program, ready to take their next steps into a better future.

NEW ICT CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION
As you might already know, we are building a new campus for more than 500 students near the Turkana Lake region. The region is very rural and surrounded by a lot of underprivileged communities. We decided to build our new campus in this deserted area to provide opportunities to people in need while ensuring that they can stay in their home region, close to their families. We attached some pictures for you, so you can see the area and have a look at the ongoing work.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED
You can also become part of our journey by helping as a remote volunteer (or locally after the pandemic is over) as well as by contributing with a donation. There are many different ways you can help as a volunteer. For example, you can share your expertise in topics such as Graphic Design, Web Design, Fundraising or Sales. If you are interested, we are happy to hear from you.

I hope you enjoyed this small update from Lodwar and you will stay connected with us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram .

Stefanie

Our Learning Lions family wishes you a Holiday Season full of peace, love, and joy to you, your family and friends and a wonderful and prosperous 2020! May all the sweet magic of the season gladden your heart and fill your every wish.

We are very blessed and grateful for your support. It is because of supporters like you that we are able to keep our project going. As you may know, in 2020 we are excited open our new ICT Center so we can extend our program to even more talented young adults.

Additionally to our new ICT campus and new students we are also looking forward to welcome volunteers from all over the world that are eager to share their knowledge and time with us from remote or locally here in Turkana. If you are interested in being one of them, do not hesitate to contact us.

Until then, best wishes from Turkana,

Learning Lions
