This month we are happy to share highlights from the sixth workshop held at the Santa Rita Learning Center in the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (El Rama) branch of our country. Using the “train the trainer” model, three talented leaders set out to go approximately 390 Km in February. The trip became an adventure when boarding a bus that takes 6 hours, then taxi, then motorcycle and finally the horse to reach the destination.
The courses began with BASIC SEWING – learning about the sewing machine and its parts, how to thread properly and oil using the right tools. Estela, leader of the Sacred Heart Learning Center of Tipitapa Managua, shares her knowledge with the women by demonstrating: cleaning the machine, practicing straight seams with the patchwork technique, how to take measurements and making a basic blouse for women.
Not only did the leaders travel, but also some of the students traveled for two days to participate. They were very happy and excited to achieve the objectives of the classes, which will be very helpful to each of them. They returned happily to their homes that are approximately 4 hours on horseback.
A group of 8 children received training in BASIC ENGLISH. Additional materials were shared according to their needs with new content for the children, hoping that they can be very useful also when in their school. The two CRAFT CLASSES included a surprise gift box and bunch of flowers with materials easy to find in the area.
Three ladies of the center wanted to learn to make woven shoes and Estela also arranged suitable materials and the threads are those that have been donated to the Learning Center from W/NP. They were able to advance and in the next meeting will finish the shoes.
On my last visit to my sister’s, she taught me to make *Alfajores** a type of cookie filled with dulce de leche and bathed in chocolate and I enjoyed sharing it with the ladies who are already experts in making cakes as a new idea to decorate the table of sweets at parties.
Very grateful to you all who help support our efforts, to Panfila, leader of the Center for all her hospitality, to Estela and Kiara who accompanied me and to the children for showing us the very beautiful landscape of their community.
