This project will set up and maintain a resource centre in Kibuli with free access to books and computers for 4,000 children in underserved communities. Classes in numeracy, literacy and ICT are offered to the children. Teachers also receive training in Early Childhood Education, Resource making, leadership and ICT.
7 out of every 10 children in Uganda drop out of school before completing Primary level. Children drop out or are absent from class for several reasons:- Among poor families, the cost of school uniforms, books, stationery, and saving funds becomes too much to bear, pushing children out of school or leading families into debt. Children with disabilities, orphans and other disadvantaged children are especially at risk. of school exclusion.
Our work provides educational and learning resources to vulnerable children and under-resourced primary schools as a means to increase enrollment, retention and improve access to quality learning for all children. To reach more children and support more community schools in the area, we would like to set up a safe, educational spaces for children, that complement existing education structures.
This children's community resource centre will serve over 4,000 children annually in the area through literacy and numeracy programs, ICT in education, and skills support. With this centre, we shall place over 100 professional and regular volunteers to support efforts to reduce school dropouts in the area, improve literacy and offer entrepreneurial support through skills training. Additionally, at least 200 teachers will receive training to improve their skills.
