20 years of civil war left many in Gulu, Uganda with few skills to earn a living. The Family Harvest Foundation, a charity started and operated by people from Gulu, is approved by the Uganda Ministry of Education to provide much needed vocational training. The trades training will allow those trained to sit examination by the Directorate of Industrial Training and be certified. The project funds will subsidize student fees, pay a small teacher's stipend and purchase training equipment.
War = no job skills + fractured families + mental anguish. Our civil war has left too many dependent on handouts. At the Family Harvest Vocational Training School in Gulu we want to turn dependent into INdependent. We know that idleness leads to gangs and destructive violence. There is pride in earning your own living and supporting your family. We want to re-build our community, one trainee at a time by providing government approved trades training.
Once trained by the Family Harvest Foundation, the trainees will have the job skills and government certifications that will enable them to support themselves and their families. The power to earn your own living brings pride and self-respect.
Through providing hands-on skills training our youth will have marketable skills for jobs. A secure job provides hope and financial security for them and their families. As the economy develops in the Gulu region there will be less opportunity for gangs to form and grow. This will build our people and our community.
