Las Chicharras: Communications Agency - A youth-led communications agency inspires young people to question, critically evaluate their contexts, and create new narratives.

The mission of the Fundación Casa Tres Patios is to train agents of change, capable of transforming their lives and society, with the skills to think critically, question, and create transformative solutions.
Las Chicharras – Communications Agency was created in 2024 to strengthen lifelong learning skills and develop key competencies identified as essential for the 21st century. The program focuses on developing curiosity, empathy, compassion, creativity, and critical thinking. The participants are adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19.
Fundación Casa Tres Patios has expanded the impact of the project through partnerships with social organizations in Medellín and, more recently, with the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia (Mincultura). These partners include Institución Educativa El Salvador, a public school located in a vulnerable area of the city; Corporación Hogar, a shelter for adolescents whose rights have been violated; Pueblo de los Niños, a non-profit organization that supports young people from disadvantaged family environments; and Casa Betsabé Espinal, a cultural space operated by Mincultura in downtown Medellín. This new location provides a safer and more welcoming environment for participants while remaining accessible to the young people from the Barbacoas area with whom we have continued to work.
The communications agency model was chosen because of the creative, narrative, and analytical skills required to develop effective communication and journalistic campaigns. These dynamics align closely with pedagogical approaches such as critical pedagogy and project-based and inquiry-based learning, which are central to the program’s methodology.
Through the agency model, participants learn to identify social issues within their communities, investigate those issues critically, and develop communication strategies and content in response to what they discover. Participants conduct research using interviews, audiovisual techniques, digital tools, and investigative strategies that culminate in editing and media production processes.
This approach allows young people to better understand and critically reflect on the social and economic conditions that often contribute to violence, delinquency, and unhealthy emotional and physical development.
This year we began planning dedicated digital communication channels that will showcase participant projects and expand the public visibility of their work.
So far this year, the project has impacted approximately 124 participants and has become one of the most important initiatives in the allied organizations.
The program has been successful because it combines theory with practice, allowing participants to develop both technical and personal skills through meaningful creative processes. From podcasts and digital publications to social media campaigns, participants strengthen communication skills such as writing, public speaking, design, and audiovisual production while also developing confidence, collaboration, and critical thinking.
All of this takes place within an empathetic and participatory methodology in which young people have both a voice and a vote, cultivating curiosity and creativity as forms of resistance within challenging social contexts.
In this way, Las Chicharras continues consolidating groups of young agents of change who replicate their learning within their neighborhoods, peer groups, and families. Participants use the experience gained through the program to create new ways of understanding their realities and imagining different futures for themselves and their communities.
These results demonstrate the importance of organizations such as Casa Tres Patios in providing creative and reflective learning spaces for vulnerable youth. The program seeks to transform knowledge and experience into tangible opportunities that strengthen academic engagement, personal development, and future employability.
For 2025–26, the challenge is to continue the program and position Las Chicharras as a Communications Agency that is continuously growing and improving its processes and training strategies, involving more participants from the current allied organizations, as well as others working with vulnerable populations.
We thank all our donors and partners for their support. Your support has been fundamental not only in helping us fulfill our mission, but also in accompanying young people in their search for equity, dignity, and opportunities for a better future through education, technology, and community action.
