By Christine Gibbon and Jane O'Leary | Kyaninga Model School Directors
Kyaninga Inclusive Model School (KIMS) is excited to announce that we have relocated to our new temporary premises down in the town of Fort Portal, Western Uganda. Followers of our progress will know that we are desperately raising money to continue the building the new Centre of Excellence, where our Therapy Centre and School can share the same site, allowing our families of children with disabilities to benefit from the holistic service we provide -all on one site. The Centre of Excellence will serve as a shining beacon, dispelling the notion that disability should disqualify anyone from enjoying equitable access to all aspects of life. Together, we are creating a world where every child, regardless of their abilities, can flourish.
In the meantime, we have moved from our original premises, located 8 km from town up a steep and treacherous road, to the centre of town. A cheer went up amongst our parents when we announced our new location, because particularly in rainy season, this has the journey to school a lot less hazardous.
Our new accessible location has created a rush of demand too for places for children with disabilities! We have enrolled an additional 12 children – many of whom are children who have previously been excluded from education and are, for the first time, enjoying the learning, friendships and challenges that being part of a school has to offer.
All of our new children are settling well but many of our families are struggling to pay even the small amount of school fees required to pay the bare necessities such as specialised equipment, staff salaries and the monthly rent. Reagan’s story is typical of so many; Reagan is being brought up by his elderly grandmother, having been abandoned by his mother and father due to his disabilities. Reagan’s grandmother was thrilled when Reagan was admitted to KIMS, but with no form of income coming into the household, she could not even gather the funds needed to buy his school uniform. Similarly, Louis, is being brought up by his single Father, who currently struggles to hold down his job as a builder, whilst also caring for Louis and has no capacity to contribute to school costs. Your contributions go directly to supporting families like Reagan’s and Louis’s – Thank you!
This Christmas why not give a child the gift of education to a child in desperate need? Imagine the impact your money could have on a child who literally has nothing else and will not be coming down the stairs on Christmas morning to face a shiny pile of presents.
We thank you once again for your support this year and wish you a very Merry Christmas!
