This project will support Kung Fu and Karate classes for 50 children in the red-light area of Forbesganj at Apne Aap's community center in Bihar, India. These martial arts classes will help children at-risk to human trafficking build self-esteem, gain skills that make them feel safe and confident, and acquire linkage to essential assets to break free from the system of intergenerational prostitution.
Youth in the red-light area of Forbesganj are under constant threat from traffickers who want to sell them into the flesh trade. The streets they live in are unsafe. The children are poor, low-caste, and may be the child or sibling of a prostituted woman. They are bullied and shamed in school because they come from the red-light area. They are often too hungry to focus on lessons in the classroom. Through this program, we aim to help our karate students regain control of their destiny.
Apne Aap's integrative Karate classes have proven to be an effective tool to combat bullying and minimize risk to sex-trafficking. Karate training provides skills to vulnerable youth, to fight back if someone tries to bully, harass or kidnap them. Children of prostituted women are susceptible to bullying, proving a hindrance to their education, directly impacting their mental health. Our program provides self defense training while instilling confidence in them amongst their peers and community.
This project will help 50 at-risk youth gain confidence, acquire practical self defense skills, and equip them to take control of their bodies in a positive way. Consistent access to mentorship, nutrition, tutoring and a safe space will help them achieve success in school, minimizing the risk of becoming trapped in systems of intergenerational prostitution.
