This project will support Kung Fu and Karate classes for 50 children in the red-light area of Forbesganj in Bihar, India. These martial arts classes will help the girls and boys to fight off human traffickers and empower them to take control of their bodies. The children live in an area where human traffickers and criminals are always on the lookout for vulnerable kids to prey upon.
Youth in the red-light area, of Forbesganj, especially girls are under constant threat from traffickers who want to sell them into the flesh trade. The streets they live in are unsafe. They are bullied and shamed in school because they come from the red-light area and also because they are often too hungry to focus on lessons. The red-light area of Forbesganj is inhabited by a formerly nomadic group that was excluded from mainstream society during British colonialism.
The Kung Fu-Karate class in the Apne Aap community center in the Forbesganj red-light area, provides the skills to vulnerable youth, especially girls, to fight back if someone tries to kidnap them or bully them. It helps kids discover the strength and power of their body and value themselves. The classes build courage and confidence among the vulnerable youth. Self-defense teaches them that they have a self that is worth defending.
This project will train 50 at risk youth, mostly girls, to gain confidence, acquire practical skills to defend themselves, and equip them to take control of their bodies in a positive way. It will also open a pathway to many of the girls to find jobs as Kung Fu -Karate trainers. The long term impact of this project is the protection of youth from human traffickers and the confidence to stay on and finish school. It is a wonderful tool to empower youth against human trafficking.
