To continue with the transfer of technical know-how and to monitor the project activities, a new mission from Italy took place last June 2014. The veterinary expert in rural development projects, Andrea Dominici, visited the site of Kasongo, in the Maniema Province, where one of the Kubunina vegetable school gardens is active.
After the last technical mission, the parents involved are improving their technique. They are in fact starting to use compost and agro-forestry techniques. Since in the area there isn’t availability of manure the idea is to avoid the use of chemical fertilizers since they’re not environmentally friendly. For this reason, we taught them to cultivate plants that have a strong fertilizer power (like titonia). All these techniques are also useful to stop the forest fires that unfortunately are still common in the area.
In the Kubunina School gardens seedbeds are being created, which are producing an important quantity of small plants able to allow also the distribution to the families in order to promote the creation of small vegetable gardens to the poorest families involved in the program who in average are very poor (with a daily income of less than 1 USD). This initiative is furthering motivating the parents’ involvement.
Again, thanks for your contribution that helps us help them help themselves
