We are building a purpose built day centre for street children in Lubumbashi, Congo.The new building will provide a safe place for children to come off the streets for care & support.They will be offered food, medical care, clean water & the opportunity to find their families if this is possible & safe.It will also include a hair dressing salon for teenage mum's trained by Kimbilio&a shop for those we've trained in sewing skills to sell their work to provide an income for their families.
Kimbilio has been operating a day centre for street children in Lubumbashi D.R.Congo for 14 years. The building we have been using is no longer available and we need to find alternative premises. We have bought a plot of land on the opposite side of the road and have made plans for the building. The number of children on the streets in Lubumbashi has increased significantly in recent years. The children we work with have many emotional, physical and health needs.
Our day centre will aim to provide support for street children 24/7, ensuring there is a place they can come to to feel safe. Our centre will provide health care, food, clean water to wash. We will also offer preventative support to parents whose children have been on the streets by offering a place for parents who have learnt sewing skills to sell their goods bringing in an income into the family and preventing the children from coming back to the streets to find food.
The centre will continue it's existing positive reputation in the area as a place where children can be supported and where they can be helped to return to their families. This will increase social cohesion and enable families to support each other. This will reduce the level of poverty found in local communities and reduce the numbers of children on the streets as well as the need for children to resort to criminal activity to find money for food.
