Kilifi County faces severe food insecurity and malnutrition, with 98% of households experiencing food shortages and 39.1% of children under five suffering from stunting. The unpredictable rainfall, soil degradation, and lack of irrigation infrastructure have weakened agricultural productivity, leaving thousands vulnerable.
Kilifi's Food Security Crisis Kilifi County has one of Kenya's highest food insecurity rates, exacerbated by: Climate variability and unpredictable rainfall cause droughts. Water scarcity is limiting irrigation and livestock health. Low agricultural productivity due to poor soil fertility and inefficient farming methods. High food prices are making nutrition inaccessible for vulnerable communities.
To eliminate hunger and enhance food security in Kilifi County through sustainable agriculture, improved water access, and nutrition programs. Specific Objectives: 1. Drill 50 boreholes to provide irrigation and drinking water. 2. Train 500 farmers in climate-smart agriculture and soil conservation. 3. Test 1,000 soil samples, ensuring optimal fertilizer selection. 4. Establish 100 community gardens, offering locally-grown food. 5. Train 200 livestock farmers on breeding and disease prevention.
Expected results include: 50 boreholes, ensuring sustainable irrigation. 500 farmers trained in smart farming. 100 thriving community gardens, improving local food access. 200 livestock farmers empowered, boosting milk/meat production. Improved maternal & child nutrition, reducing malnutrition rates. The project is highly sustainable, as trained farmers will apply smart agriculture techniques, ensuring long-term food security.
