Final Report for KidREACH mentoring/tutoring

By Daryl Thompson | Senior Writer

The KidREACH program in Appalachia is a highly effective mentoring/tutoring program for elementary students who are at risk of academic failure.  In addition to the volunteers tutoring the students on their homework, KidREACH provides the students with enjoyable and stimulating experiences and events such as field trips to museums and zoos.  Students get to have experiences that they would not normally have because of their families' financial hardships.  This spring all the KidREACH groups went on field trips to zoos.

As well as field trips, the KidREACH Super Day event was held this spring to engage the students in interesting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities such as geocaching. The event was very well attended and achieved its goal and making learning fun for the students.

Support of the KidREACH program has provided direct mentoring and tutoring services to elementary students struggling in school and living in poverty in Appalachia.
